Clash of Warriors

Every major war of the 20th Century has produced heroes of the hour - men who rose above the mediocrity to lead their fellow soldiers to victory, or sometimes defeat.

In Clash of Warriors, we examine the backgrounds and personalities of the finest commanders of that century. Each episode takes two of the world's greatest combatants as they face their ultimate tests against each other.

Episode guide-

Dowding Vs. Goering
In June 1940, Great Britain stood alone against Hitler. In the aftermath of France's fall and the evacuation at Dunkirk, it was only a matter of time before Britain would face invasion.

Eisenhower Vs. Von Rundstedt
In arguably the most pivotal battle of World War II, Supreme Allied Commander Dwight D. Eisenhower faced German Field Marshal Gerd von Rundstedt on the beaches of Normandy.

Hindenburg Vs. Grand Duke Nicholas
The Battle of Tannenberg was of crucial importance in the first full month of World War I on the Eastern Front. The Russian Army suffered a humiliating defeat by a numerically inferior German enemy.

MacArthur Vs. Yamashita
Between October 1944 and August 1945, General Douglas MacArthur and his men recaptured the Philippines from the Japanese in the largest single U.S. campaign in the Pacific War.

Patton Vs. Von Kluge
On 25 July, 1944, in northwest France, 1,500 bombers of the American 8th Air Force, supported by a massive artillery strike, began concentrated carpet bombing on German defenses.

Falkenhayn Vs. Petain
The Battle of Verdun, fought on the Western Front between February and December 1916, began as a relatively minor offensive that grew into a grotesque monster.

Montgomery Vs. Rommel
The desert campaign in North Africa and Tunisia was the staging ground for a clash of arms between Field Marshal Erwin Rommel's Afrika Korps and General Bernard Law Montgomery's Eighth Army.

Yamamoto Vs. Nimitz
The Battle of Midway, fought in June 1942, occurred within six months of Japan's surprise attack against the American Pacific Fleet at Pearl Harbor.

In the Shadow of the Moon

Between 1968 and 1972, nine American spacecraft voyaged to the Moon, and 12 men walked upon its surface. They remain the only human beings to have stood on another world. In the Shadow of the Moon brings together for the first, and very possibly the last, time surviving crew members from every single Apollo mission which flew to the Moon, and allows them to tell their story in their own words. The definitive story of going to the moon, told by those who went. Between 1969 and 1972 an elite group of men achieved an incredible dream. They were, and remain, the only human beings to set foot on a planet other than our own. These personal testimonies are interwoven with digitally remastered footage from Nasa film archives, much of it previously unseen and all of it hauntingly evocative of a bygone era. The result is an intimate and epic film which vividly communicates the daring and the danger, the pride and the passion, of this band of special young men.
