From Stump to Ship is an amateur industrial film by Alfred Ames, owner of the Machias Lumber Company, in Machias, Maine and by Dr. Howard Kane of Washington, DC.[1] The half-hour 16mm film was shot over the winter of 1930 in the logging woods and shows logging in the forest with hand tools and horses, then moves to the spring log drive, with loggers using peaveys to break up log jams on icy rivers as the logs are moved from the forest to the mill. Detailed views of mill work, changing the bandsaw, and making shingles. Lumber is loaded onto schooners in Machias for transport to New York. The film was originally silent, with a typed script which Ames read aloud when he showed the film. In 1985, with funds from the Maine Humanities Council, the narration was recorded with the film.The film is distributed by Northeast Historic Film, in Bucksport, Maine. Face Value was created with the intention of leading the viewer through four different themes to explore the (dis)connection between our personal values and the values we express as a society through our economic and political systems. Our central question is: What is it about the way we structure our society that creates a disconnection between personal and common/shared values? We discussed in particular whether there are systems we could adopt that allow for a more sustainable way to run our society. The project’s goal was to start some provocative conversations with a variety of people who have interesting perspectives on this topic. We looked at the proposed and controversial Enbridge pipeline project (British Columbia, Canada) as a specific, tangible example of the “structures our society creates” (ie. investing in carbon intensive infrastructure) and how, even though many people feel that this project does not reflect their personal values, our political and economic structure...

Greensburg, Kansas was hit by an EF5 tornado, the most powerful and devastating storm in American history (destorying 95% of the city). At 9:45 p.m. CDT on May 4, 2007, Greensburg was hit by an EF5 tornado. The tornado was estimated to be 1.7 miles (2.7 km) in width and traveled for nearly 22 miles (35 km). Ninety-five percent of the city was confirmed to be destroyed, with the other five percent being severely damaged. The National Weather Service estimated winds of the tornado to reach 205 mph (330 km/h). This was the first tornado to be rated EF5 since the update of the Fujita scale. The tornado had caused EF5 damage to at least one well-built home in Greensburg, and also is the first “5″ classification since May 3, 1999, when an F5 tornado ripped through Moore, Oklahoma, as part of the 1999 Oklahoma tornado outbreak.
