HBO's Kings of the Ring shows the highlights and knockdowns of all these fights, and puts them in their fascinating historical contexts. The documentary, narrated by Louis Gossett Jr., profiles the heavyweight history of boxing this century, beginning in the early days of Dempsey, Tunney, Schmeling and Carnera. Vintage films are there to note all these early fights. This is unbelievable stuff. Boxing was a very different game in the early days of the century. For starters, if you knocked down your opponent, you were able to start pummeling again the moment his knee left the canvas.This made for some really unsportsmanlike-looking boxing as the prevailer would wait, standing over his opponent with a punch half-cocked while the other struggled to his feet! There were headlocks and pushes and often both combatants would be on the floor punching each other to bits. Luckily, Gene Tunney came along, putting the science into the "sweet science", a true artist of the game who helped revolutionize boxing as we know it.
